Who This App is For
The App is intended for use by adult community literacy coaches. It is not directed at children, and children do not use this App. Coaches use the App to monitor learning activity in the Curious Reader app (a separate Curious Learning product) among the children they support.
Information We Collect
A. Information that stays only on your device (never sent to Curious Learning)
The following information is stored locally on the coach's phone in the App's private storage. It is never transmitted to Curious Learning's servers or any third party:
- Learner names (optional): A display name the coach assigns to help identify each child.
- Parent/family phone numbers (optional): Used by the coach to send WhatsApp messages directly from their device.
- Learner photos (optional): A photo the coach attaches to a learner profile for identification purposes.
This information is under the coach's sole control. Curious Learning cannot access, retrieve, or delete it remotely. If the coach uninstalls the App or clears its data, this information is permanently deleted.
B. Information synced to Curious Learning
The following coach profile information is collected during onboarding and periodically synced to Curious Learning's secure backend systems:
- Coach name
- Coach phone number
- Coach location (city or region, as entered by the coach)
This information is used by Curious Learning to manage and support its coaching programs. It is not sold or shared with third parties for marketing purposes.
C. Learner progress data (anonymous, read-only)
Learner reading-progress data is retrieved from Curious Learning's data warehouse and displayed in the App. This data is keyed to an anonymous Curious Reader User ID — it contains no name, phone number, or other personally identifying information about any learner or their family. The App does not modify or transmit this data.
D. Camera and photo library
The App requests access to the camera and photo library solely to:
- Scan or decode QR codes displayed on learners' Curious Reader screens (to capture the anonymous User ID without typing), and
- Optionally attach a learner photo to a local profile.
QR scanning is processed entirely on-device. Images are not transmitted to Curious Learning's servers.
E. Location
The App requests location permission to associate the coach's profile with a geographic region during onboarding. This is used for program monitoring and is part of the coach profile data described in Section 2B above. The App does not track location in the background.
F. Advertising ID (for analytics purposes)
The App uses Firebase Analytics, a service provided by Google, to collect anonymous usage data that helps Curious Learning understand how coaches use the App and improve its functionality. As part of this, Firebase may collect your device's Advertising ID (a resettable, non-personal identifier assigned by your Android device). This data is used solely for internal analytics — to understand feature usage, session patterns, and app performance. It is not used to serve advertisements, and it is not shared with third-party advertisers. You can reset or opt out of Advertising ID collection at any time through your Android device settings under Privacy > Ads
How We Use Coach Profile Information
- To associate coaches with programs and partner organizations.
- To support Curious Learning staff in managing and monitoring coaching programs.
- To improve the App and the Curious Reader program.
- We do not sell coach data. We do not use it for advertising.
Data Sharing
- Curious Learning staff may access coach profile data (name, phone, location) for program management and support.
- Service providers: We use Google Cloud (BigQuery) to store and process program data. Google processes data on our behalf under a data processing agreement.
- We do not share coach information with third parties for their own marketing purposes.
- Learner PII (names, photos, parent phone numbers) is stored only on the coach's device and is never shared with Curious Learning or any third party.
Data Retention
Coach profile data is retained for as long as the coach is an active participant in a Curious Learning program, and for a reasonable period thereafter for program evaluation. You may request deletion of your coach profile data at any time by contacting us (see Section 8).
Security
Coach profile data synced to our servers is transmitted over HTTPS and stored in Google Cloud infrastructure. Learner names, photos, and phone numbers are stored in your device's private application storage and are not accessible to other apps.
Your Rights
You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your coach profile data (name, phone number, location) by contacting us at the address below.
